DC Habitat works with public, private, nonprofit, and foundation partners to help local families realize the dream of homeownership, providing a pathway to the middle class, breaking the cycle of poverty, and building strong communities. Our partners donate their time, treasure, materials, and expertise to support local families. There’s more than one way for you, your organization, or your business to make a gift in kind. All contributions, including gifts of materials and time, are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
What are in-kind donations?
In-kind donations are gifts of goods, materials, or services that help DC Habitat to build homes and community in the District. Some examples include:
- An electrician who donates their time to help install wiring on a home
- A donation of land on which DC Habitat can build a home
- A donation of a home that DC Habitat can renovate
- A donation of building materials, like lumber, siding, appliances, or tools that DC Habitat would have otherwise had to pay for
We accept a wide range of in-kind donations and not all of them have to be related to construction. We have in-kind partners who provide us with legal support, meals for volunteers, materials and event support, photography and videography, and more. If you’re interested in supporting us with goods or services but aren’t sure how you can help, don’t hesitate to reach out. You might not realize that something you have to offer can make a huge difference and help us to support more families.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price. When you donate to a ReStore, you’re helping Habitat raise funds to build more affordable housing in your community and diverting tons of reusable materials from landfills.
While we do not operate a ReStore within the District of Columbia, there are nearby locations in Virginia and Maryland where you can donate goods or shop with a purpose. Making a donation is easy: bring your donation to any ReStore location or call to schedule a donation pick up and have Habitat come to you!
