Now more than ever, families need a safe place to call home.
As we are told to “shelter in place,” there are far too many families for whom staying at home isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. So many are facing a loss of income and uncertain futures, and for those families living in overcrowded, unhealthy, or unaffordable circumstances, it’s even worse. These are the families we serve, and they will be the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftershocks.
In the face of so much uncertainty, there’s one thing we know for sure: with your help, we will continue to serve DC families and the city we love. We continue to be inspired by our many supporters asking us how to help families through this crisis.
In response, we’re taking immediate action by launching the Emergency Housing Stability Fund to get through this unprecedented time together. With an initial goal of $500,000, the fund will:
1. Expand affordable homeownership opportunities
2. Protect homeowners
Expanding Affordable Homeownership Opportunities
Families cannot safely “shelter in place” when that shelter is unhealthy or overcrowded, or when they are forced to make difficult choices just to make sure rent gets paid – to buy groceries or fill prescriptions, to stay home or continue going to work.
Right now, we are doing all that we can to finish 14 homes in Southeast DC that will provide local families with a stable home, and we are poised to build nearly 30 more. With your help, the EHSF will allow us to finish those homes and house 14 families quickly, and begin our next projects ahead of schedule to ensure that nearly 30 more families weather this emergency in a home that is safe and affordable.
No one should lose their home because of COVID-19. We are committed to working alongside homeowners as they navigate the financial shocks of this crisis. Your support will help us offer access to housing counseling and mortgage-focused resources to Habitat and other DC homeowners that may be facing financial hardship. Our Home$mart program stands ready to offer support and resources to ensure families stay safely and stably housed in a home that is already affordable.
We’ve got a plan. Now all we need is you.
For 30 years, our family of Habitat supporters has helped us build more than homes. You have built a strong and resilient community that takes care of our neighbors when they need us most. Together, your generosity and gracious support have made home a reality for hundreds of DC families. In supporting the EHSF, you can make sure our neighbors – and our community – make it through this crisis together.
