Where We Build
Since Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. was founded in 1988, we’ve built decent, affordable homes in all four quadrants of the District, helping to shelter more than 300 D.C. residents. We’re currently building homes in these areas:
During the past 21 years, DC Habitat has built and renovated more than 200 homes around the District of Columbia. This map shows the locations of all sites on which we’ve built since our founding:

In 2010, Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. will begin construction on new affordable homes in the Ivy City neighborhood of Northeast Washington. Plans have been drawn for 6 single-family homes and 2 rehab condos on Providence Street.
We are one of four developers that were awarded land grants from the District, along with funds from the first round of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, to produce more than 50 units of mixed income housing in the Ivy City community.

D.C. Habitat A Brush With Kindness team in action
A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) is a program that helps preserve homeownership by partnering with homeowners who are struggling to restore and maintain a safe, decent place to live. When basic expenses exceed income month after month, home maintenance is often the casualty. D.C. Habitat’s ABWK program has a goal to serve low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exteriors of their homes.
Through the program, D.C. Habitat volunteers repair homes in partnership with qualified, low-income homeowners. The work – including painting, landscaping, weatherization and other minor exterior repairs – is being done in both the Deanwood and Ivy City neighborhoods, with donated materials whenever possible.
Owner occupied homes within the District of Columbia are eligible for the ABWK program if the family’s income is 50 percent of the area median income (AMI) or lower, and if the homeowner is willing to put their own sweat equity into the improvements. For more information and to apply, download the ABWK application guidelines.

Completed DC Habitat Homes in Deanwood
D.C. Habitat is building a 53-home development in Northeast Washington’s Deanwood neighborhood. We’ve averaged a 10-home per year pace of construction in this development, which is nearly completed. We expect to complete the last homes in early 2010.
We typically build three bedroom, semi-detached style homes. Each has a kitchen, living room, and one bathroom. Most do not have basements. We go through all of the licensing and permit procedures required of other builders in the District of Columbia. The homes usually take about 9 months to complete.
